1. Installation of EDXRF_Analyser Step 1: Insert the installation CD of EDXRF_Analyser into CD drive, open EDXRF_Analyser→120MB→Disk1 folders in turn, and you will see. Step 2: Double click Setup.exe and you will see following interfaces. 2. Data Backup Step 1: Click Start→All Programs→EDXRF_Alanyser_EN and right click the shortcut icon in the menu on the right, select Attribute in the dialog box appeared. Step 3: You will see all the files under installation directory as follows: Step 4: Find the folder data and copy it to another safe location. Note: If you want to restore original data, just need to recopy the backup to the installation directory of the software. Operation Procedure for EDXRF_Analyser EDXRF-Analyzer is full element analysis software newly developed by Skyray and the operation interface is as below. Ⅰ Software introduction 1 Menu bar It consists of Main, View, Curve, Spectrum, Report and Help. 1-1 Main 1) Normalize Device: It assures the peak locations of tested elements are correct. 2) Setup Instrumental Parameter: a. Voltage: control the value of high voltage. b. Current: control the current value of X-ray tube. c. Amplification (roughly): adjust the peak locations of elements roughly. d. Amplification (fine): adjust the peak locations of elements finely. Note: When the value of amplification (roughly/fine) increases, peak locations of elements move rightwards; vice versa. e. Do not adjust count rate: when we select this button, we will fix the value of voltage and current. Select this button and the count to make sure rate will keep stable while testing. f. Adjust count rate automatic: Select this button and the count rate is set as the value in the first textbox on the right according to the percentage in the second textbox while testing. 3) Preset measurement time: It sets measurement time for sample testing. 1-2 View 1) Hide ROI: It displays or hides parts you selected in spectrum area. 2) Hide PKL: It displays or hides peak labels in spectrum area. 3) Hide Analysis Info: It displays or hides spectrum information in spectrum area. 1-3 Curve 1) New: build new working curves, enter curve names and click OK. 2) Open: open existing working curves. 3) Delete/rename: It deletes or modifies existing working curves. 4) Interesting Elements: You can select elements to be tested by clicking them in the table below. 5) Set up ROI: selects part you are interested in from spectrum area. 6) Calculate Area of ROI: calculate areas of interested parts you have selected. 1-4 Spectrum 1) Save: save the spectra of samples tested. 2) Open: open the saved spectra. 3) Delete: delete the saved spectra. 4) Qualitative analyze: display locations of elements in spectrum area. 5) Qualitative analyze parameter: adjust the number of elements analyzed qualitatively in spectrum area. 6) Qualitative report: list elements analyzed qualitatively. 7) Calculate Intensity: use current spectrum for plotting working curve. Click Join Work Curve. 8) Reference Spectrum1/2: 1 adds a spectrum and 2 adds another one. 1-5 Report 1) Setup printer parameter: sets relevant parameters of printer. 2) Print Spectrum: print current spectrum. 3) Report Content: display current testing results. 4) Export jpeg: save current spectra as jpeg files. 2 Tool bar Pre-setup measurement time: It sets measurement times for different samples. Testing Organization Information. Hide interested area: It hides or displays parts selected in spectrum area. Hide peak label: It hides peak labels in spectrum area. Hide & Analysis Info. New curve: It builds new working curves, input the curve name and click OK. Delete/rename curve: It deletes or modifies existing working curves. Open curve: It opens existing working curves. Edit interested element: You can select elements to be tested by clicking them in the periodic table of elements. Edit content and intensity: It edits contents and intensities of interested elements. Show work curve: It displays current working curves. Build peak label: It builds peak labels of elements. A peak label generally lies at the top of peak. Power scale: Click this item to build energy calibration after peak labels have been built. Save spectrum: It saves sample spectra you have obtained. Delete spectrum: It deletes sample spectra saved. Open spectrum: It opens sample spectra saved. Count intensity of the sample: It uses current spectrum for plotting working curve. Reference Spectrum&1: It adds a first spectrum. Reference Spectrum&2: It adds a second spectrum. Setup printer parameter: It sets corresponding parameters of the printer. Print spectrum line: It prints current spectrum. Inform content: It displays current testing results. Help: It provides help files of the software. Exit. 3 Others 1) Shortcut key area: There are six shortcut keys: Pre-setup measurement time, Open curve, Open spectrum, Reference Spectrum&1, Inform content and Reference Spectrum&2. 2) The two buttons for controlling the testing are Start/Continue and Stop. 3) Parameter statuses of X-ray tube. 4) Current spectrum information. 5) Curve name, curve type and ready or not. 6) Channel, energy and count rate of spectrum where current cross cursor lies. 7) Possible unknown elements and line series where cursor is when element is confirmed. 8) Interested elements for current working curve. 9) Fitted element of interested elements for current working curve. 10) Preset time for spectrum measurement and actual measurement time used. 11) General information of spectrum. 12) Spectrum area. Ⅱ Operation Procedure for Testing 1. Check the power cord and data cable are correct before you start the instrument. 2. The instrument should be preheated for 30 minutes before testing. 3. You can start testing after preheating. According to your material and the testing condition (air/vacuum) choose a corresponding curve. Select Curve→open→ … 4. Adjust the amplification. In order to get a better result, we must make sure that the spectrum of the main element existed in the material be in the same location with the reference spectrum of the main element. So we should open the reference spectrum of the main element existed in the material. For example, we open reference spectrum of Cu when we testing Copper alloy. If you want to test a stainless material, you should open the reference spectrum of Fe. The steps are as follow: 1) Click SpectrumReference Spectrum1/2 in main menu or Reference Spectrum&1/2 in tool bar. Select Fe in the “open spectrum” dialog box. 2) Right click in spectrum area and a hint box appears, select Lock Spec12, move the movable block to the peak in small spectrum area and reference spectrum of sample appears in spectrum area. If the spectrum of Fe and the reference spectrum of Fe don’t superpose, you can make them superpose by adjusting amplification (roughly/fine). The steps are as follow: At first, open “Main→setup instrumental parameter”. If the spectrum of Fe(yellow one) is on the left of reference spectrum of Fe(red one), we should add the value of amplification (roughly/fine), then we click corresponding item in “Adjust High Voltage Or Current Code” area, at last we click “Adjust” button to make sure that the value changed; vice versa. 5. Main→ preset measurement time Set the testing time for the sample. 6. Put the sample into the chamber. According to you testing condition (air/vacuum), open/close the vacuum pump. Click “start” button and input the sample name and start to test the sample. 7. When the testing finish, Click icon “Inform content “to obtain the results after testing. 8. If you need to save the testing results to a directory, please select Save Report to File checkbox and click OK. Uninstall of EDXRF-Analyzer (Before reinstalling the software) Click Start button in the left lower part of desktop and do as shown in figures below. Calibration Procedure for EDXRF_Analyser Ⅰ. Input Fe sample into sample chamber and preheat the instrument Ⅱ. Set up parameters Select φ3.0 mm collimator(without filter), set tube voltage at 40kV, tube current at 200µA, automatic count rate at 6000 and amplitude at 3%, and measurement time at 100s. Ⅲ. Establish working curve (stainless steel as example) 1.New: Click Curve →New and input curve name. 2.Interesting Elements: Click Curve →Interesting Elements and select the elements you need for testing, as shown in figure below. 3.Intensity Calculate Methods: The intensities of Cr, Fe and Mo are net areas, intensities of Mn, Cu and Ni are multi-element fittings, and the correlative elements of Mn are Cr and Fe, correlative element of Ni is Cu, and correlative element of Cu is Ni. Take Mn as an example here: 1) Right click one element in the left lower part of operation interface and select Intensity Calculate Methods. 2) Select Multi-element spectrum fitting radio button. 3) Click OK and select Fe and Cr as correlative elements. Ⅳ. Build peak labels and scan sample spectra 1.Check if the shapes of Cu and Ag peaks are normal or shifted under above conditions. Generally save the spectra of Cu and Ag samples, build peak labels and then select Power scale option. The steps are as follow: 1) Open pure Cu an Ag reference spectrums ,then click “Build peak label” button,put the white hand on the peak of Cu Kα to left click ,input Cu in peak element and choose Kα in line name, click OK ;Take the same step to build Ag peak label. 2) After building peak labels, remember click ”power scale” button. 2.Scan pure element spectrum: Ag, Zn, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Sn and Ti. 3.Scan other sample spectra: Stainless steel1#, stainless steel2#, stainless steel3#, stainless steel4#, stainless steel5# and stainless steel6#. Note: 1) Each sample spectrum should be saved. 2) You can make comparison with reference spectrum while scanning other sample spectra. Ⅴ. Determine element boundaries Right click one element in the left lower part of operation interface and select Peak Left/Right to determine both boundaries of the element. Generally the both boundaries are confirmed at the both corners of the peaks. Ⅵ. Build spectrum analysis information 1.Right click one element in the left lower part of operation interface and select Show Spectrum Analyze. And the fitted boundaries of multi-element fitting are the peak boundaries of element. 2.Modify both fitted boundaries of main element to make them the same as both boundaries of fitted element after editing both fitted boundaries of element. The procedure is as follows: Double click the fitted boundaries to be modified in the second column and a dialog box “Do you edit the data?” Click OK and modify fitted boundaries according to relevant curve IDs in third column. 3.Click OK to exit Spectrum Analysis Information window. Ⅶ. Join to calculate intensity Open the sample spectra (stainless steel1#, stainless steel2#, stainless steel3#, stainless steel4#, stainless steel5# and stainless steel6#) for calculation. Click Count intensity of the sample in tool bar and then Join Work Curve. Ⅷ. Edit content and intensity Enter the element contents in corresponding standard spectra in Edit content and intensity window and click OK. Ⅸ. Edit working curve Click Curve →Display Work Curve, select Insert in Curve type and main element in Elements to be normalized. Click OK and the curve is finished. Ⅹ. Test again and backup data 1.Test standard samples again and check if the curve is OK. 2.Backup the data for calibration when curve is OK.
